Navy Testing Standardized Menu Program Aboard USS Halsey

USS Halsey was the first West- Coast based ship to try out a new menu program in April. This program comes with many benefits. It’s a healthful alternative along with every non- healthful menu item, like veggie burgers while hamburgers are being served. Special theme meals are brought into the 21 day cycle such as Mexican and Asian food. Also chicken, ice cream, hot dogs and hamburgers for special “theme meals.” This new menu calls for food to be baked instead of fried. It’s not as popular because they like their french fries fried and their hash browns brown.

  3. In 2006, the USS Halsey crew were one of the first to test out a new meal program that was gonna go to other stations if the meals worked out for the crew and they liked it. The meals were improved health wise and changed things like veggie burger instead of hamburgers and hash browns and fries not fried but baked. They also started doing "theme nights", which included Mexican night, or Asian night, etc. By the end of 2007, the ships under a certain area were also given these new meal plans.

  7. The USS Halsey crew was one of the first to try a new meal program in the West-Coast in April 2006. The program would go to other stations if it worked out and if the crew enjoyed it. The program included healthy meals, and non-healthy meals. They would have veggie burgers and regular burgers to let them decide on having a variety of decisions or not. Another way of staying healthy was baking their food instead of frying it. To get them more interested in the idea, they would let them have themed events such as beach picnics, Mexican night, ice cream socials, etc. Eventually other crews would use this program in specific places.

  12. After researching food services that are on modern warship, I leaned that the food that soldiers and sailors are given are not the best. If it was up to me to make a meal list I would at lease throw in some chicken for protein and other different types of foods that would give them the vitamins they would need. For one meal I would add chicken, rice, with a side of fruit. Another would be a piece of steak, mash potatoes, grilled onions and a piece of bread. Finally, I would do a dish with grilled salmon, rice, and black beans. Each would be able to eat at anytime and would be given the option.

  14. The USS Halsey sailors are getting involved in a consistent and regular meal program. The Navy Family Support (NFS) has begun an activity managing this program to help distribute and transport these certain goods for a “flavorful and robust” meal. This supply is large, plentiful and provides the crew with healthy food choices. James Watts, the “special theme meal incorporator” made it a 21-day cycle, providing special holiday meal themes such as, Mexican or Asian food. Majority of the food would be chicken, ice cream, hot dogs or even hamburgers. For a healthier selection they’ve decided to bake more of the food instead of frying it. Soon after this ship became part of the organization all the ships (COMNAVSURFOR) we’re added and used this meal program for their crew.
